Disabled Holidays in Bude
Bude has been a beloved tourist spot ever since Victorian times, and its popularity shows no signs of letting up today (it was chosen as the Best UK Coastal Resort in 2015 and 2016). Much of the town’s appeal is owed to its prime location on the north Cornwall coast, where it overlooks expansive golden beaches and the rolling waves of Bude Bay. Bude’s location close to the Devon border also makes it an ideal base for exploring large parts of both Devon and Cornwall.
Bude boasts several stunning beaches, but the most popular is the adjoining Summerleaze, which is just five minutes from the town centre and has level access for wheelchair users. Like many beaches in Cornwall, special sand wheelchairs can be hired from the beach office free of charge. Summerleaze’s star attraction is its large semi-natural swimming pool that borders the cliffs and offers visitors a safe place to enjoy the water.
The town of Bude is just as attractive as its environs, with its natural and manmade waterways, copious green spaces and a range of traditional shops and restaurants. Though it’s a popular place to be, the atmosphere is still decidedly laidback, and the town is small enough to have retained its Cornish charm.
The town’s standout attraction is Bude Castle, a castellated stone mansion overlooking Summerleaze. The castle is home to the Heritage Centre, which displays objects and exhibitions related to the history of the town, as well as an art gallery that features the work of local artists. Entry is free.
