Disabled Holidays in Port Isaac
With its whitewashed cottages, winding streets and peaceful harbour, the pretty fishing village of Port Isaac is one of Cornwall’s most iconic tourist destinations. The village benefits from a prime position amidst one of the county’s many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as being within easy reach of star attractions like Tintagel Castle and Bodmin Moor.
Port Isaac’s looks have made it a favourite filming location for numerous TV shows and films, most notably the hit comedy drama Doc Martin, in which it goes by the fictional title of Portwenn. Fans will be able to take in many familiar sights from the show, most notably Fern Cottage, the location of the home and surgery of Martin Clunes’s titular character. Other productions filmed here include the Poldark TV series; The Shell Seekers, with Vanessa Redgrave; and Saving Grace.
Port Isaac is also home to a typically Cornish selection of galleries, arts and crafts shops, and cafes selling authentic cream teas. Most are conveniently located close to the village’s picturesque harbour, whose little sand-and-shingle beach is sheltered from the elements by a pier and the enveloping cliffs. In summer the harbour doubles as a base for fishing excursions and sightseeing tours.
Another trip well worth taking is to the legendary Tintagel Castle, which lies just over 10 miles to the north of the village. Dramatically positioned on a rugged headland, it’s remarkable for its evocative ruins and stunning location. The site is also partly wheelchair-accessible.
