Disabled Self Catering Countryside Holidays in Helston with Hearing Facilities
Situated at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula, the market town of Helston is in an ideal location for exploring some of the most appealing scenery in western Cornwall.
Helston has a long history as both a former stannary and the location of the famous Flora, or “Furry”, Dance, one of the oldest British customs still practised today. Held at the beginning of May, the event comprises a series of marches and dances in which throngs of colourfully dressed participants parade through the streets.
There’s no shortage of spectacle in and around Helston the rest of the year either. Almost the entire Lizard Peninsula is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, known for its distinctive serpentine cliffs, secluded coves and golden sands. The largest beach is just a 10-minute drive away, at Porthleven, and offers nearly three miles of peaceful surroundings in which to relax and unwind.
Nearby you’ll find the Flambards theme park; the adorable Cornish Seal Sanctuary; and the National Trust’s Penrose Estate, where you can explore the woodland around Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural lake. Other recommended attractions include Helston Museum, which features collections focusing on local geology, archaeology and industry.
Helston is also home to a number of welcoming tea rooms, pasty shops and traditional pubs. The most noteworthy is The Blue Anchor, which dates back to the 15th century and is one of the oldest operating inns in Britain. It’s renowned for its uniquely flavoured Spingo ales, which follow a traditional recipe and are brewed onsite.
