Disabled Holidays in French Pyrenees with Wheel in Shower, Shower Chair and Airflow Mattress
A land of stunning peaks, pristine glaciers, mountain pastures, mysterious grottos, tumbling waterfalls and thermal baths - the French Pyrenees make for an amazing backdrop to your rural holiday in France.
Offering a taste of the country’s wilder side, the region is a paradise for skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, while also serving as a safe haven for many endangered animal species, including the Pyrenean mountain goat and brown bear.
Yet despite the French Pyrenees’ unspoiled environs, the area provides a wealth of accessible holiday opportunities to those with mobility requirements. Available activities range from gentle wheelchair-friendly trails through sublime mountain and lakeside scenery, to more high-energy pursuits such as disabled-friendly skiing, husky sled rides and whitewater rafting (more below).
The Pyrenees are also home to some of France’s most idyllic spa towns. The most famous is Lourdes, which rose to prominence in 1858 when local peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous saw visions of the Virgin Mary in a rocky grotto. Today millions visit every year to make their pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and to partake of the town’s sacred waters, which are said to have healing properties.
(If you would like to go on an accessible pilgrimage tour to Lourdes, please contact us and we’ll arrange your tour and all your travel for you.)
Another highlight is the colourful town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre. About 20 kilometres from Lourdes, it’s known for its prestigious Grands Thermes spa, whose naturally sourced waters are traditionally employed for the treatment of rheumatism, nervous afflictions, indigestion and other maladies.
