Disabled Holidays in Lourdes

The town of Lourdes is in the Midi Pyrenees region of south west France and known throughout the world for being a major Catholic pilgrimage site. In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous saw a white robed female apparition 18 times in a grotto called Massabiele along the banks of the Gave de Pau river. The lady revealed herself as the Virgin Mary, in a fervour Bernadette fell to the ground and dug into the earth until a puddle of water appeared, turning into a pool and forming into the sacred spring. Nowadays there are religious processions every day and between April to October this pretty town is packed with pilgrims. If you favour fresh, clean air, a picturesque town and Gallic hospitality, then a disabled holiday in Lourdes is ideal.

How To Get There

By car / ferry - Driving to Lourdes from Calais takes approximately eleven hours. The distance is approximately 1100km and costs 227 euros in tolls.

By train - There is a connecting train to Lourdes from Toulouse. Trains to Toulouse from Paris Gare d’Austerlitz take approximately five hours.

By air - There are flights to Lourdes from London Stansted, flight time is approximately two hours.

Accessible Attractions - Most people go to Lourdes to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, yet there is also Musee de Cire de Lourdes, a wax museum, Chateau Fort and Casa Natal Bernadette - the home of Bernadette. Levels of accessibility vary so please speak to us about what you would like to experience on your Lourdes holiday. Additionally, if you wish to go on an accessible pilgrimage tour, contact us and we can arrange your tour and all your travel for you.

Best Time to Go - Lourdes is an all year round destination. It is less busy between October to April, yet, because of its religious significance, remains popular all year round. It can get very hot in summer and, due to it’s location at the base of the Pyrenees, cold in winter.
