Disabled Countryside Barn Conversions in Lostwithiel with Wheel in Shower and Ground Floor Facilities
Tucked away in the wooded environs of the scenic Fowey valley, the delightful town of Lostwithiel is one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets.
It’s also one of the prettiest. The 19th-century travel writer Arthur Norway asserted that Lostwithiel had the “loveliest inland scenery in Cornwall” – and, thanks to its secluded location, not much has changed since.
Today Lostwithiel’s main claim to fame is as Cornwall’s capital of antiques, on account of its glut of antiques shops, regular auctions, markets and fairs. You can spend hours here rummaging through the various assortments of furniture, ceramics and collectibles, and when you’re done there are still lots of other specialty outlets to explore, including dealers of arts and crafts, paintings, lace and patchwork.
There are even more local artefacts on show at Lostwithiel Museum, which is housed in the stately Georgian corn exchange and the adjoining town gaol. The museum contains an intriguing array of items relating to local farming and industry, including the town’s first horse-drawn fire engine, dating from 1716.
Lostwithiel’s most striking attraction is Restormel Castle, the remains of which overlook the town from the edge of a rolling hillside. Adapted from a motte-and-bailey fortification in the 13th-century, the castle is notable for its remarkably well-preserved circular keep, which affords spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Lostwithiel also benefits from its proximity to other popular tourist spots, such as spectacular south-coast beaches, Bodmin Moor and the Eden Project.
