Disabled Holidays in Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia’s vibrant capital, Kuala Lumpur is an exciting synthesis of gleaming skyscrapers, gigantic shopping malls, bustling street markets and a long list of iconic attractions.
The city’s combined Eastern and Western heritage has endowed it with varied cultural and culinary scenes and a wide selection of architectures and atmospheres – from intricately adorned colonial buildings and mosques to a plethora of street food cafés and restaurants.
This is also the place in Malaysia to shop, being home to some of Asia’s largest retail centres like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Suria KLCC and Mid Valley Megamall, where you can splash out on designer fashion and jewellery or pick up a basket full of bargains at one of the frequent sales.
Alternatively, explore Central Market for locally made souvenirs, batik, embroidery, carvings and sculptures; or take a trip to Chinatown for all manner of affordable clothes, herbs and fresh produce.
While you’re out and about, make sure to sample plenty of local delicacies. Whether it’s a spicy barbecue prepared at one of the myriad hawker stalls, a refined French-Asian fusion specialty, or a sweet Kaya toast snack in a traditional kopitiam coffee shop – eating out in Kuala Lumpur is an experience not to be missed.
The city makes it easy to get around too, with a highly accessible public transportation system comprised of disabled-friendly buses, LRT light rail trains and a monorail.
Accessible attractions
No trip to Kuala Lumpur is complete without a visit to its famous Petronas Towers. The tallest twin towers in the world, they offer a wheelchair-accessible tour that takes visitors on a breathtaking journey up to their sky bridge and 86th-floor observation deck.
More incredible vistas are on offer at the nearby KL Tower, another of the planet’s highest structures, where you can enjoy a meal with the best window seat in the city at the revolving restaurant.
Back on ground level, Kuala Lumpur boasts numerous parks and green spaces, many of which provide full or partial accessibility. These include the KL Bird Park, home to more than 200 species; the KLCC Park, a popular location to view the glowing Petronas Towers in the evenings; and the Perdana Botanical Garden, with its orchid collection, deer park and man-made waterfalls.
A wide range of other recommended accessible attractions include the impressive Aquaria KLCC aquarium, the National Zoo, National Planetarium and National Museum.
To save money and make getting around easier, you can buy a KL Pass. The pass gives free entry to multiple attractions and access to the wheelchair-friendly Hop-On Hop-Off tour bus to get around the city. It also entitles visitors to numerous discounts for shopping and dining.
