Disabled Half Board Beach Bungalows in Gran Canaria with Wheel in Shower and Shower Chair

The third largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is known as a “continent in miniature” due to the incredible diversity of its many landscapes. From the island’s northern forests, to the unspoiled peaks and valleys of its interior, to the warm, sandy south, Gran Canaria offers a wide variety of holiday experiences, all within touching distance of one another.

Over a quarter of Gran Canaria’s 150-mile coastline is made up of gorgeous, white-sand beaches. Some of the best include the iconic rolling dunes of Maspalomas; the sweeping arc of Playa del Inglés; the Caribbean-flavoured Puerto Rico; and the ever-popular Las Canteras, in the historic capital of Las Palmas.

Las Palmas is also the island’s cultural hub and home to a host of museums and galleries, as well as the old town of Vegueta, where the colourful, centuries-old buildings make you feel like you’ve stepped back into Gran Canaria’s early Hispanic past.

More fascinating local history can be discovered at the famous Cueva Pintada, or Painted Cave, in the north-western town of Gáldar. One of Gran Canaria’s most important pre-Hispanic locales, it’s adorned with geometric shapes, thought to relate to the lunar and solar calendars. Unlike some of the island’s other archaeological sites, Cueva Pintada is situated right in the heart of town and is wheelchair-friendly.

Gran Canaria also boasts a great array of parks and gardens, including the largest botanical garden in Spain, Jardín Canario, and Palmitos Park, home to tropical flora, 1,500 bird species, a petting zoo and thrilling dolphin shows.
