Disabled Hotels in Costa Almeria with Hoists Available, Shower Chair and Adapted Transfer

Tucked away in Spain’s south-eastern corner, Costa Almeria is something of a hidden gem, delighting visitors with unspoilt beaches, palm-fringed coastal cities and dramatic landscapes.

Costa Almeria’s geographical position has blessed it with an incredible climate. The region is part of the country’s hottest province, with over 320 days of sunshine a year and Europe’s lowest rainfall. Average high temperatures often climb above 30ºC in July and August, and summers tend to last from before Easter to November.

Consequently Almeria is premium sunbathing territory, even in what would be the off-season elsewhere – and its coast offers plenty of options for sun worshippers, with 60 miles of beaches to choose from. Of these, several are accessible to wheelchair users, including Las Negras, Agua Amarga in Nijar, and Aguadulce beach in Roquetas de Mar. Many beaches also have flat, accessible promenade walks to enjoy.

In addition to its beaches, Almeria’s coastline boasts copious romantic coves, quaint fishing villages, untamed headlands and nature reserves. Many are located in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, Andalucia’s largest protected coastal area. The park is a haven for flora and fauna and home to unique volcanic rock formations.

Farther inland, Almeria is characterised by vast tracts of semi-desert and rugged mountain valleys. This starkly beautiful landscape has long made the region popular with Hollywood movie makers, with many famous productions being filmed here. Some of the best-known include Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra and numerous Westerns, notably the “Dollars Trilogy” starring Clint Eastwood. Many Western film sets still stand today and have become popular tourist attractions.

The city of Almeria, the province’s eponymous capital and largest town, has its own long sandy beach and accompanying flat walkway, as well as several interesting museums, a plethora of fantastic tapas bars and – best of all – the spectacular 10th-century Alcazaba hilltop fortress.
