Disabled Holidays in Krakow

View of the Old Town and Wawel Hill in Krakow, Poland

Rivalling Vienna and Prague as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Krakow is a destination bursting with sophistication, style and historic splendour.

Poland’s second city, Krakow traces its origins back to the 7th century and served as the nation’s capital for 500 years during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This rich legacy has endowed it with an enviable heritage, and today Krakow boasts over 6,000 historic buildings and monuments, close to 20 museums, numerous galleries and one of the Continent’s finest medieval squares.

Unlike many major Polish cities, Krakow managed to survive World War II practically unscathed, and as such its Old Town has retained its traditional atmosphere and authentic flavour. Today the whole district is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to important sights including Wawel Castle, the Renaissance Cloth Hall and the elaborate St Mary’s Basilica. Colourful street performers, traditional market stalls, and contemporary bars, restaurants and clubs can also be found in abundance.

Accessible Attractions

Despite its historic character, Krakow has a number of attractions accessible to disabled visitors. The city’s centrepiece, the Main Square, is flat and mostly free of cobblestones and is within walking or rolling distance of the majority of the best sights. At its heart is the magnificent Cloth Hall, a grand 16th-century trading centre billed as the world’s oldest shopping centre. This wheelchair-accessible building is bursting with stalls selling uniquely Polish items including amber jewellery, cloth handicrafts and woodcarvings.

The 14th-century Wawel Cathedral, another iconic sight, has an accessible entrance and impressively ornate interiors. The neighbouring Wawel Castle presents more of a challenge for wheelchair users, but still has some accessible areas and is worth the effort for those keen to explore its museum and royal apartments.

Krakow is also an ideal base for excursions to some of the country’s most significant heritage sites. These include the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, which is located just over an hour west of the city. Not for the faint of heart, the camp presents a harrowing account of life and death in captivity during World War II and offers extensive guided tours to get the most out of your visit. Although some areas can be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair, guided access for the disabled is available, and wheelchairs can be hired free of charge.

Also close by is the spectacular Wieliczka Salt Mine. Continuously active from medieval times until the 21st century, the 330m-deep mine is an extraordinary labyrinth of tunnels, subterranean lakes, and underground churches sculpted from salt. The mine recently underwent a million-dollar adaptation which added lifts, ramps and disabled toilets to make it suitable for wheelchair users.

Further accessible attractions include the Krakow National Museum’s main gallery, the Aviation Museum, Museum of Municipal Engineering, Zoology Museum, Ethnography Museum and the Remembrance Museum.

We can also arrange accessible tours of Krakow and nearby attractions. These visit Krakow Old Town, Wieliczka Salt Mine, Auschwitz-Birkenau, sites related to Pope John Paul II, and the mountain resort town of Zakopane.
