The Pyrenees are also home to some of France’s most idyllic spa towns. The most famous is Lourdes, which rose to prominence in 1858 when local peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous saw visions of the Virgin Mary in a rocky grotto. Today millions visit every year to make their pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and to partake of the town’s sacred waters, which are said to have healing properties.

Another highlight is the colourful town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre. About 20 kilometres from Lourdes, it’s known for its prestigious Grands Thermes spa, whose naturally sourced waters are traditionally employed for the treatment of rheumatism, nervous afflictions, indigestion and other maladies.
