Disabled City Break Holidays in Prague
Elegant, evocative and historic, Prague is one of Europe’s leading cultural cities, and thanks to recent developments it’s also very accessible.
Nicknamed the City of a Thousand Spires, the Czech capital is renowned for its storybook architecture, with Baroque and Gothic churches, castles and clock towers dominating the skyline.
Many of the top sights are located in Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose compact surface area makes visiting the most important attractions simple and convenient.
A profusion of museums, galleries and concert halls – the vast majority of them disabled-friendly – populate the city’s famous town squares and medieval streets. Explore a little and you’ll also find storefronts glistening with some exquisite crystal and glass, street stalls stocked with sweet-smelling trdelnik pastries, and numerous microbreweries selling an array of locally brewed beers.
Old Town is bordered to the north and west by the lazy Vltava river, whose calm waters make for an idyllic boat ride. Cross one of its stone bridges – such as the 14th-century Charles Bridge, with its profusion of statues and street vendors – to come to the hilltop Prague Castle complex. Classed as the largest ancient castle in the world, it boasts some great accessible attractions along with amazing views of this fairytale city of spires.
Accessible attractions
The majority of Prague’s top sights are accessible to people with disability requirements.
Starting in Old Town there’s the National Museum. Housed in a monumental Neo-Renaissance building on Wenceslas Square, it contains over 14 million items and has free entry for disability card holders.
The National Gallery is spread across several buildings throughout the city and also has free entry for the disabled. It often features exhibits for visually impaired guests, allowing them to experience works of art via touch technology.
Several of Prague’s famous towers are accessible, such as the Old Town Hall tower and the Gothic Jindrisska Tower. Visitors can also take a lift up the city’s tallest building, the Zizkov Television Tower, a relic from the communist era that provides breathtaking panoramic views.
Across the river, most of the buildings in the castle complex are accessible, including the famous St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and St George’s Basilica.
The Prague Botanical Gardens and Zoo on the northern outskirts have special pathways designed for the disabled, as well as entrances to the individual pavilions. For the visually impaired there is information in Braille and regular exhibitions that can be appreciated by touch.
Other accessible attractions include: the Rudolfinum and Municipal House concert halls, the Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia, Kinsky Palace, the Jewish Museum, the Czech Museum of Music, the Mucha Museum, Tyn Cathedral, the Maisel Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, Emmaus Monastery and more.
Getting around
Prague has a partially accessible public transport system, with a number of low-floor trams and buses (the type of the bus is always noted in timetables).
The majority of the metro stations are wheelchair-accessible and have lifts, platforms or direct entrances for the disabled. Accessible taxis also operate in the city.
