Pula amphitheatre, Croatia, one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in the world

Known for its Roman ruins, lively cultural scene and delightful location on the Croatian coast, Pula is a smaller, quieter alternative to Dubrovnik, with a number of accessible attractions well worth visiting.

This city of 57,000 sits at the southern end of the Istrian peninsula and boasts the classic Adriatic terracotta-topped houses and secluded pebble beaches that so beautifully characterise the region.

Pula is also an ideal base from which to explore the hinterland of the Istrian peninsula, where you’ll discover enticing Venetian towns, copious olive groves and fragrant pine forests.

Accessible attractions in Pula

Pula is blessed with a number of ancient ruins, most notably the striking Roman amphitheatre, which dates from 79 AD and ranks as one of the best preserved in the world. Located in the heart of the city, the amphitheatre is wheelchair accessible and hosts concerts and a film festival in the summer. Additional remnants of Roman occupation include the Temple of Augustus, the Forum and the Arch of the Sergi.

The city is also home to the disabled-friendly Church of the Sacred Hearts (ramped access), which serves as a museum and gallery exhibition centre, and the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, housed in a splendid star-shaped Venetian fortress.

For the sun worshippers, Pula boasts several beaches, the most accessible of which is Valkane Beach, which has been partly adapted to include ramps to allow access to the sea. The beach has a lifeguard service, two bars and a restaurant and is conveniently close to a bus stop that connects it to the main town.
