Disabled Holidays in Launceston

St Mary Magdalene Church, Launceston, Cornwall

Once the ancient capital of Cornwall, Launceston is a town teeming with local history.

Its star attraction is Launceston Castle, which stands atop a natural mound that dominates the skyline. The castle dates from Norman times and features an unusual keep, consisting of a round tower built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, inside an earlier circular shell-keep. The castle grounds make for a great picnic spot and house an exhibition centre that traces a thousand years of site’s history, with finds from local excavations. It also has disabled access.

Around town you can see the remnants of the original town wall, along with the excellently preserved 13th-century Southgate arch. The arch once served as one of three entranceways to the original medieval fortification and now incorporates an art gallery and the town hall.

Launceston’s medieval streets are also home to an assortment of independent shops, cafes and interesting attractions. One of the best is the Lawrence House Museum, which stands close to the castle, on a road Sir John Betjeman once described as having “the most perfect collection of 18th-century townhouses in Cornwall”. The museum offers an absorbing insight into local life and includes a toy room, Victorian kitchen and a selection of costumes hailing from the 18th century to the 1960s.

Nearby is the exquisite St Mary Magdalene Church (pictured), a Grade I listed building that dates from the 1500s. The church is highly regarded for the series of intricate carvings that decorate its granite exterior, as well as its wealth of lavish interior memorials and woodwork.
