Ruins in Turkey

A true crossroads of cultures, Turkey is a stunningly diverse destination that offers a wealth of varied holiday opportunities.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape to some of the world’s best beaches, an incredible array of ancient ruins, a cultured city break with tantalising street food, or a journey through breathtaking countryside, you’ll find it here.

Turkey enjoys idyllic coastlines on three seas: the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea, with each offering a wide selection of sweeping golden beaches and modern resorts.

The south-western Turquoise Coast, or Turkish Riviera, is especially popular. Boasting seafront gems like Antalya, Alanya and Bodrum, its jade waters and forested slopes make for a lush landscape which combines accessible Blue Flag beaches and beautiful mountainside scenery.

Just as abundant are the country’s sites of historic interest. Previously the domain of the Greeks, Romans and Ottomans, Turkey has inherited a rich legacy of grand structures across its lands, many in excellent condition. Highlights include the majestic ruins of Ephesus; a wealth of amazingly preserved amphitheatres at Aspendos, Hierapolis and Perge; and Göbekli Tepe, believed to be the world’s oldest place of worship.

There’s no shortage of incredible natural landmarks either. In the heartlands rise the fairytale volcanic spires and sculpted cliff face dwellings of Cappadocia. To the west stand the shimmering terraces of sky-blue hot springs in Pamukkale. And in the north, teeming waterfalls pour into secluded wooded lakes in the Küre Mountains National Park.

Another major draw is the cuisine. Turkish street food is renowned worldwide for its freshness and unique bursting flavours and can be found in abundance at reasonable prices. Head to Istanbul for some of the best, and while you’re there don’t forget to enjoy a traditional soothing hamam (Turkish bath) and massage and visit the splendid Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace.

Turkey is easy to get to as well, benefiting from cheap direct flights from UK airports in less than four hours.
