Disabled Holidays in Cote d'Azur

The colourful town of Menton on the Cote d'Azur, French Riviera, France

The Cote d’Azur, or the French Riviera, was one of the first modern resort areas. This Mediterranean coastline stretches from Menton on the Italian border in the east to Marseille in the west and takes in Antibes, Cannes, Frejus, Hyeres, Juan Les Pins, Monaco, Nice and St Tropez. The beauty of this stretch of France is remarkable: mimosa blossoms in February, warm in spring and summer, cool in autumn and winter, with the impossibly blue water after which the coast is named.

How To Get There

By car / ferry - Driving to the French Riviera takes at least 12 hours from Calais and so an overnight stop is recommended. Driving on the toll roads will cost at least 100 euros too. Nevertheless, the journey is pleasant and should be regarded as part of your holiday. The French Riviera is also known for the three Corniches, or spectacular roads carved into the mountainside between Nice and Menton. The Mediterranean meets the sky on one side while the other side is interspersed with rustic villas, pines and cactuses. At the top is the D2564 or the Grand Corniche, both dizzying and rustic, the middle road is the N7 or the Moyenne, while the N98 is the Basse, or coastal road.

By train - There's a number of ways to get to the Cote d'Azur by train: For Cannes: Take the Eurostar from London to St Pancras International to Paris. Then change stations in Paris (from the Gare du nord to the Gare de Lyon) to pick up the TGV duplex train to Nice. The second option, which is longer but easier as it only involves a same station transfer is to take the Eurostar at Lille, change at Lille for the TGV to Nice. Paris to Cannes takes five hours while Lille to Cannes takes eight. Since May 2015, however, Eurostar also now operates a service direct to Avignon and Marseille - London to the south of France in under six hours! Alternatively, Paris Bercy station operates an Auto Train service to the South of France whereby cars and passengers travel on separate trains.

By air - The nearest airport is in Nice - Aéroport Nice de Côte d'Azur, with frequent and efficient SNCF trains to Gare de Cannes on rue Jean-Jaurè.

Accessible Attractions - Many of the promenades and boulevards on the Cote d’Azur are flat and, enabling pleasant meandering along the shoreline. Elsewhere, the Parc Vaugrenier in Villeneuve-Loubet is large, peaceful and accessible while the city of Arles with its Roman heritage and once the base for Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin is also well worth a visit.

Best Time to Go - April to September. It gets notably colder in October.

Type of Accessible Accommodation - Hotels, apartments, villas and camping.
