Disabled Holidays in Cairns

Green Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Australia

Occupying a prime spot on the gorgeous Coral Sea coast, the laidback city of Cairns is a fantastic destination for enjoying the best of tropical Australia.

Visitors come here to explore Queensland’s natural wonders such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest, both of which are on Cairns’ doorstep.

But Cairns is just as popular for its welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere and wonderful climate, which boasts pleasant temperatures and 300 days of sun a year.

There’s also a plethora of unique restaurants and shopping opportunities – including modern malls, charming souvenir shops, and Cairns’ famous late-night markets, where you can buy locally made gifts, like jewellery and indigenous crafts, from over 130 stalls.

Accessible tours and attractions

Tours

You’ll be spoilt for choice for accessible activities in and around Cairns. Dreaming of a magical tour to the rainforest or Great Barrier Reef? There are plenty of options to choose from – and we can arrange them for you in advance, saving you the stress and strain.

Sail to idyllic Green Island, with its pristine sandy beaches, magnificent coral reefs and abundant marine life. Take a scenic accessible helicopter ride and marvel at the rainforests or reefs from the air. Or go on a wildly exciting crocodile adventure tour in a wheelchair-accessible tour boat – to name just a few!

Daintree Rainforest

Two hours north of Cairns is Daintree, the world’s oldest tropical rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers, you can explore Daintree on your own or with an expert guide, trekking through mystical jungle and discovering plants and animals found nowhere else on earth.

Daintree has a range of accessible areas and activities, including various wheelchair-accessible boardwalks, exotic fruit tasting sessions, river cruises and accessible beaches.

Kuranda

More amazing sights await at the village of Kuranda, a picturesque resort nestled in the mountains 15 miles northwest of Cairns. Here you can explore the gorgeous surrounds via rainforest and river cruises as well as shop at colourful markets and visit sanctuaries dedicated to koalas, butterflies and multicoloured birds.

Again access is easy, with Kuranda reachable by car, the Kuranda Scenic Railway or – for the most spectacular journey – via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, a network of wheelchair-accessible gondolas that rise high into the mountains, gliding just metres above the lush canopy.

Beaches

The nearby sandy beaches at Palm Cove and Port Douglas are disabled-friendly and provide beach wheelchairs to ensure convenient access. You don’t have to leave Cairns for a day on the sands, though. Esplanade Lagoon’s manmade beach is just as beautiful as its natural neighbours and lets you swim, sunbathe and enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the city’s stylish foreshore.

Other recommended accessible attractions include the multi-million-dollar Cairns Aquarium with its vast range of marine life, the sumptuous Cairns Botanic Gardens and the Cairns Art Gallery.

Getting there

Flight time from the UK to Cairns is around 30 hours, including one stopover in the Middle East or Asia. Cairns Airport is a 10-to-15-minute drive from the city centre via accessible taxi.

Getting around

Cairns benefits from a wheelchair-accessible bus network as well as a range of accessible taxis for getting around the city and local area.
