Holidays for People with ADHD
DisabledHolidays.com can provide help and advice when booking a holiday if you, a family member or a friend has ADHD.
If you have a destination in mind, we’ll be able to advise on its suitability. Alternatively, if you don’t have anywhere in mind, we will use our knowledge and expertise to find your perfect holiday!
Our job is to ensure that your holiday is stress free, from the time of booking to arriving home. As everyone’s requirements are different, we recommend calling one of our friendly advisors on 0161 260 2218 to discuss how we can arrange the best holiday for you.
FAQs
My child has ADHD and needs to have a routine. Can you help me plan a routine on holiday?
Yes. We understand that everyone has their individual routines and that people with ADHD need consistency. When you contact us, we will listen to your queries and be able to provide you with answers to help you plan a daily routine while you are on holiday. We will be able to find ideal accommodation for you with suitable facilities and even help you plan your activities around meals and rest breaks.
Is there anything I should consider packing to make the journey easier for my child who has ADHD?
Yes. Some suggestions include:
- Any tangible reinforcements to reward your child’s good behaviour
- Assistive communication tools
- Journey distractions; e.g., games, toys, iPad, activity book
- Noise-cancelling headphones
What packing tips do you suggest for adults with ADHD?
- Check your travel documents. If you’re travelling abroad, make sure your passport isn’t about to expire. Check it in good time before any scheduled trip to allow time for renewal. Expect your passport to take about three weeks to be processed.
- If you need a visa, start the process early. Wait times for visas vary widely, depending on the country you plan to visit and whether you’re applying during peak travel season.
- Remember any medication you might need. If you’re flying, make sure to take some in your hand luggage as well as in the baggage that gets checked in. And take spares in case any medication gets lost.
- Allocate extra time for packing. Think about how much time it will take to pack bags, pick up maps, get your travel money, do research and last-minute shopping.
- Make back-up copies of critical travel documents. Keep all confirmation numbers, passports, boarding passes and hotel reservations in your carry bag, purse or briefcase, in case you misplace the originals.
- Start list-making and packing early to avoid stress.
- Don’t forget your tickets!
Can I have any assistance at the airport?
Yes. Some available services include:
- Priority boarding to avoid noisy crowds
- Special assistance onto the aircraft to make sure boarding is stress free
- A seat away from the noise of the aircraft
- Noise-cancelling headphones
I find it difficult to manage my time. Can you help me with this?
Yes. We can help you plan your time by estimating how long it will take to complete tasks; e.g., packing. Before you travel, we can also plan fantastic days out for you to help you manage your time while on holiday.
I find it difficult to relax on holiday. Do you have any suggestions?
Yes. The best way we can help is to plan your perfect day trips in advance. Lying around all day can make you more stressed, so it can be helpful to enjoy physical activities while on holiday to release endorphins, chemicals that soothe the body and mind. If you feel particularly tense, try picking up the pace! If you let us research and book days out for you before you travel, this will make you more at ease while away. It will also mean that we can help you manage your time better on holiday.
What about travel insurance?
To help ensure peace of mind while on holiday, we advise getting travel insurance. We recommend our partner Fish Insurance, one of the UK’s biggest disability insurance providers, who provide cover for people with ADHD.
