Description

Located in the heart of the Poitou Charentes, this converted 19th-century barn offers two spacious private gîtes. It has been designed by an architect and has many of its original features, including exposed stone walls and oak beams.

The property is located in a small hamlet close to the tranquil town of Lezay, which offers a large weekly market, good restaurants, supermarket, large outdoor swimming pool (not accessible), park with play area and a fishing lake. Set in the heart of the Poitou Charentes, it’s an ideal base to explore this beautiful region of France.

Gîte 1 (sleeps up to 6)

  • Kitchen/dining room with patio doors leading out to the terrace
  • Lounge with TV/DVD/video and woodburner
  • One double bedroom on the ground floor and a further twin and double on the first floor. There is also a large mezzanine with a sofa and table for board games
  • A large wet room with WC and a further WC, both on the ground floor
  • Large oval aboveground pool (9.5m x 4.7m x approx 1.2m deep). The pool has four ladder-type steps up to a raised decking and Roman steps down into the pool. It has a gate for security that can be locked.

Gîte 2 (sleeps up to 6)

  • Large kitchen/dining room with French doors leading out to the courtyard garden
  • Lounge with TV/DVD and woodburner
  • One double bedroom on the ground floor with en suite wet room/WC. Upstairs there is a double room and a twin room. There is an additional bathroom on the ground floor
  • Aboveground octagonal wooden pool (6m x 4m x 1.2m deep with removable wooden ladder steps).

Both these spacious gîtes have been designed to accommodate wheelchair users, each having a ground-floor double bedroom and roll-in wet room with self-propelled shower chair. The light switches/plug sockets are one-metre high and the door widths are wider. Each kitchen has a lowered worktop surface. Gîte 2 has a more compact bedroom, with an en suite wet room/WC. There is a transfer board and a perching stool available on request.

Both gîtes have free-to-view English channels and WiFi.

The wet room in Gîte 1 has a height-adjustable shower, specially adapted sink and a toilet with raised seat, if required.

The large downstairs double bedroom in Gîte 1 is approx 4m x 6m and has double-opening French doors leading out to the terrace and garden.

The ground-floor double room in Gîte 2 has its own en suite wet room. This is a more compact wet room; please contact for further details.

Attractions

Brouage Citadel (1h 40m drive)

Remarkable 17th-century walled garrison town and the birthplace of Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Quebec. Once a major Atlantic port, Brouage was abandoned and survived as a village on the Charentes fenlands. Off the beaten track, it has remained virtually unchanged, its fortifications rising from the marshes.

La Rochelle (1h 23m drive)

Historic Atlantic port city with mediaeval fortifications. The Aquarium at La Rochelle is one of the 20 most-visited attractions in France. La Rochelle also has a maritime museum.

Rochefort (1h 22m drive)

Small city just inland from the coast, once a major naval arsenal. Sights include old naval buildings, including the old naval rope works; the Maritime museum, with an historic collection of model sailing ships; and a shipyard where a replica of the 18th-century frigate, the Hermione, is being built. There’s also the unusual House of Pierre Loti, home of a French 19th-century traveller, with its genuine Moroccan interior.

Royan (1h 38m drive)

Classic seaside resort. The La Palmyre Zoo is one of the best in France. Jardins du Monde offers a discovery of garden styles from round the world, plus a butterfly house.
