Description
A spacious villa and will comfortably accommodate up to 4 adults and 2 children. The property includes a lounge, a large kitchen/diner, and 2 en-suite bedrooms. The villa is situated in the Lower Alentejo province of southern Portugal. The town of Ourique is located 6 km in one direction and the village of Garvao can be found 5 km away in the opposite direction.
This countryside retreat is all wheelchair accessible. Set within 20 acres of gloriously unspoilt countryside, there are two holiday properties which were built to reflect the style of the traditional long low Alentejo farmhouses.
Both properties are stylish and elegant, as well as fully wheelchair accessible - allowing everyone to enjoy a holiday in this lovely area of Portugal.
The properties include wider doorways, level thresholds and terraces, and gently sloping pathways. Both properties are extremely spacious and furnished to the highest standards: including solid wood furnishings and leather lounge suites. The fully equipped kitchens also have solid wood furnishings with granite worktops.
Both villas are designed for your comfort, regardless of the season or the climate. Each house has a wood-burning stove for the cooler winter months and fans available for the summer.
Each villa has a private covered barbecue terrace for alfresco dining, with lawned areas beyond. A path then leads to the pool terrace which is available to all guests. The pool is heated and measures 10 x 5 meters. Beside the pool there is a shady pergola as well as a sun terrace with loungers. Pool lifts are available to hire.
All of the terraces offer spectacular views over the valley toward the distant hills. Spending the evening dining alfresco and enjoying the glorious sunset, complete with a glass of delicious local wine, is the perfect way to end the day. Thanks to the clean and clear air the night skies treat you to a dazzling display of starlight.
Room specifications
Bedroom 1 is a family room and has a king sized double bed plus a single bed. It has a full en-suite bathroom with a corner bath (with overhead shower), washbasin, W.C. and bidet.
Bedroom 2 has a zip and link bed which may be made up as either a large double bed or 2 singles. It has a ‘wet room style’ en-suite shower room, which includes a level floored shower, washbasin and W.C. An extra bed for a child or cot, can be added to this bedroom.
Although of equal proportions, we would not recommend bedroom 1 to wheelchair users. Accessibility and space are greatly reduced by the additional single bed (within the bedroom) as well as the bath and bidet in the bathroom.

Area information
The town of Ourique is only 5 minute drive away. Ourique is situated almost midway between Lisbon and the Algarve. Historically the town has 2 claims to fame. Firstly it was the site of a 12th century battle that eventually led to the overthrow of the Moors. There are a couple of statues in the town marking the event. Secondly and much more recently, it was in the fields surrounding this area that young men gathered for ‘picnics’. The purpose being to plot the 1974 revolution far away from the prying eyes of the hated Secret Police.
Ourique today is a thriving and well equipped town. A good selection of cafes and restaurants are in the town or nearby with varied menus at reasonable prices. There are shops and supermarkets, banks, cash points and a post office, an internet café and a petrol station just outside of town. It also has a hospital/health centre, pharmacy, police station and fire brigade.
Ourique is also now regarded as the ‘capital’ of the black pig (porco preto) producing area of the Southern Alentejo. As with most livestock here they are free range reared and the quality of the meat, cured hams and smoked sausages (chouricos) is superb.
Other culinary delights from this area include hearty breaded soups (acordas), tasty lamb dishes and a wide variety of fish and other seafood.
Herbs and spices from North Africa, India and the Far East combine effortlessly with typical Mediterranean ingredients - olives, olive oil, tomatoes and garlic - to produce a uniquely Portuguese flavour.
Wonderfully calorific desserts (traditionally made by nuns) are also a ‘must’, as are the many varieties of hand made cheeses.
The Alentejo is the largest Region of Portugal but also the least populated, often described as ‘Portugal’s secret paradise’ and ‘Europe’s last undiscovered wilderness’; both are true.
The landscape is of gently rolling hills topped with cork and holm oaks and crystal clear lakes and rivers, reminding many of the plains of Southern Africa, but the carpet of wild flowers in Springtime, remind others of Provence. It is a land of unspoilt natural beauty and home to a vast array of wildlife, including magnificent birds of prey.
Truly, the Alentejo is paradise found.
This area of Portugal has much to offer: history, culture, nature and wildlife, as well as activity and adventure - and our central location means that all places of interest are within easy reach, whatever your choice may be.
