Disabled Holidays in Ankara

Ankara is the administrative centre and capital of Turkey - think business and finance rather than beaches and fun. It lies on the Anatolian peninsula in the north east of Turkey and, like many places in the country has infused its colourful history with the demands of the modern age. The Atakule observation tower in Çankaya, the diplomatic centre, looks down over Ankara and its various districts such as Tunale and its bustling cafes and Ulus, the historic centre with early republican buildings and Ankara Castle. Ankara has come a long way since its earlier incarnation of Angora and associations with a breed of long haired goat. As the centre of finance and commerce rather than a resort, its population has increased massively in the last hundred years or so. Visit Ankara as a tourist and you’ll be hard pressed to find a native ‘Ankarali’, what you will find, however, is a modern city that merges comfortably with its past - such as the ancient site of Gordion, in suburban Ankara where King Midas is buried.

How To Get There

There direct flights from the UK to Ankara airport, which is 28km north east of the city. Flight times are around four hours. Some carriers fly to Istanbul, followed by an air transfer to Ankara.

Best Time to Go

The winters are cold and usually snowy, but the hot and dry summers are more comfortable than the coastal regions of Turkey.
