Disabled Holidays in Bulgaria

Boats in Nessebar, Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a land of spectacular contrasts. From gorgeous beaches to snow-capped mountains, ancient monuments, cultured cities and tranquil countryside, it offers a range of enticing experiences for every type of holidaymaker.

Bulgaria’s 200-mile stretch of Black Sea coast is home to some of Europe’s most attractive sandy shores. Appropriately named resorts like Sunny Beach and Golden Sands now rival those in Spain and Greece for popularity and (like much of the country) are competitively priced in comparison to their Western counterparts. There are also a number of beaches dedicated to people with disabilities and impaired mobility.

Skiing is another popular pastime here. Bulgaria’s selection of mountain ranges attracts skiers from far and wide to modern resorts like Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. Beginners can learn to ski or board with the help of friendly English-speaking instructors, while numerous more challenging runs are available for the more experienced.

Many of the country’s fascinating towns and cities have long histories, often dating back millennia. The ancient capital Sofia appeals with its authentic Eastern European ambience and onion-domed churches like elegant Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, as well as boasting many of the nation’s finest museums, galleries, restaurants and clubs.

To the east of Sofia is Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Europe. Unsurprisingly, it contains a glut of historical treasures, including an iconic hilltop Roman amphitheatre and an Old Town populated by colourful 19th-century mansions.

Rural areas are full of pleasant surprises too. Timeless stone villages pepper a landscape of peaceful lowland plains, forested hiking trails, scenic mountain lakes and extensive natural cave formations. Secluded monasteries are another popular feature. The country’s largest, Rila Monastery, is particularly enchanting and is renowned for its spectacular frescoes and dramatic setting.
