Maya Museum

Cancun’s Maya Museum includes 350 archeological artifacts that took 30 years of research to procure, includes relics that have never been shown as well as others that were discovered in recent excavations. Other displays in the museum were previously exhibited at different venues like the Museo Regional de Yucatan or “Canton Palace” and the former Archeological Museum of Cancun.

Cancun’s Maya Museum boasts three exhibition halls of more than 4,400 square feet, two permanent and one temporary venue for national and international exhibitions. An exhibition of 14,000-year-old skeletal remains is the first things to explore when you enter the museum. Discovered in the last 12 years in Tulum’s underwater caves, these remnants offer important clues of the arrival of mankind to the American continent.
Five buildings are open to the public: The Great Pyramid, a 26 foot structure where the main building is located; The South, comprising of residential units, palace-style building and small altars; Dragons - named in the 1970’s after an area where snake heads were found and mistaken for dragon heads - in this area stands a temple adorned with fragments of ancient mural paintings of animals and marine elements.
Next to the Maya Museum, the San Miguelito archeological site recently opened as well. This location was inhabited over 800 years ago until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

Xel-Ha is a true paradise for nature lovers and an amazing natural aquarium. The ancient Mayas baptized this wonderful site with the name of Xel-Há, which in Mayan language means 'Where the water is born'. Due to its privileged position, during the pre-Hispanic times Xel-Há served as an inner port, trading center, place of pilgrimage and shelter for sailors, besides being a food reserve during bad weather.

According to legend, Maya gods joined their wisdom, illusions and love for beauty, to create a place that would bring together the best of nature in one place, and that place was called Xel-Há. Once created, the gods were so pleased with this heavenly place; they decided to allow the entry to all mortals. To take care of it and the elements that surround it, the gods appointed three guardians: 'Huh', the iguana, Guardian of the land, 'Chuc Kay', the Pelican, Guardian of the Air, and 'Kay Op', the Parrotfish, Guardian of water. It is said that these guardians still protect and care for the Park and everyone who comes to visit.

Snorkel tours catered just for you

We offer unlimited snorkeling on Punta Nizuc as well as a visit to the Cancun Underwater Museum. Departing from Aquaworld marina we take you on a motor boat to Punta Nizuc reef area where you disembark to the floating platform. Here you adorn your snorkel gear and you’re ready to take the plunge and snorkel as long as you like in the crystal clear turquoise waters. There are also 12 statues that form part of the Cancun underwater Museum in this part of the Nizuc area. Beers and refreshments are available on the platform all day so feel free to stay.

 

 

Scuba for non-certified divers
