Day 1
You will be met at Cape Town Airport and transferred to your hotel in this beautiful city, within sight of Table Mountain.
Check in and relax in your magnificent surroundings.
Day 2
Today enjoy a full day private tour of the beautiful city of Cape Town.
Weather permitting, we start by ascending Table Mountain by cable car to see one of the world's most famous views (alternatively we will drive up Signal Hill). We then drive around the city to see the key sights including the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, City Hall, Greenmarket Square, Houses of Parliament, Bo Kaap, Castle of Good Hope, District Six and Sea Point.
After lunch (own account) we continue to beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens, nestled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and regarded as one the most beautiful botanic gardens in the world. Bequeathed to the nation by Cecil John Rhodes, the garden was established 1913. There is an avenue of camphor trees, a beautiful protea and fynbos garden, useful plants garden, sculpture garden and a dell garden as well as a world class collection of indigenous South African flora. Wonderful summer sunset concerts are held in the gardens on Sunday evenings from December to March.
Day 3
Today your guide will collect you for a full day tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
Enjoy wonderful ocean views as we drive around the Cape Peninsula to naval Simonstown, where we visit the resident penguin colony at Boulders Beach.
We continue to Cape Point where we hope to see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July to November). We take an accessible funicular ride up to the Old Lighthouse, before returning via spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay and Cape Town.
Day 4
Enjoy a full day tour through the renowned Stellenbosch Winelands, travelling through the scenic Franschhoek Valley where a handful of French Huguenot refugees started South Africa’s now famous wine industry.
We visit the historic university town of Stellenbosch and several different wine estates – sampling as we go.
After lunch at a good restaurant or wine estate (own account), enjoy some final wine tasting before we return to Cape Town.
Day 5
In season, today enjoy a full day tour to the small seaside town of Hermanus, a scenic 2-hour coastal drive travelling via Gordon’s Bay and False Bay.
Along the way we stop at Betty's Bay to visit Harold Porter Botanical Gardens to view their marvellous collection of king protea, orchids, irises, daisies and fynbos, before continuing to Hermanus which has an interesting open-air craft market in season and a coastal path with indigenous fynbos and bird life.
From July to November, southern right and humpback whales come here to breed and this is considered the best location for land-based Whale Watching in the world. Once severely endangered, these magnificent creatures of the deep are now breeding successfully in the area due to a major international conservation effort. You can enjoy whale watching from the cliffs and, weather permitting, you can book an optional boat ride to get up close to these magnificent creatures of the deep (manual wheelchairs only).
Afterwards we return to Cape Town, travelling through the apple orchids of Elgin and Sir Lowry's Pass.
Note: If you take the optional whale watching boat ride, you will need to be lifted into the boat. Wear a jacket as it can get cold on the boat and take a sun hat, sun glasses, binoculars, sunscreen, camera & small towel. Take your own snacks & drinks. You will be on the water for several hours in seas that can be rough, so if you are not a good sailor remember to take preventative travel sickness tablets well in advance.
Day 6
Transfer to Cape Town Airport for your onward flight.
You will be met at Victoria Falls Airport and transferred to your hotel situated near the mighty Zambezi River. Located in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), where the borders of five African countries converge, the sheer scale of this vast international conservation project is difficult to comprehend. It encompasses a bewildering range of experiences, ranging from the mighty Victoria Falls to the lifeforce of the region, the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers.
Check in, settle in and relax whilst you catch your first glimpses of the magnificent Smoke That Thunders first discovered by Dr. David Livingstone and still one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. The flow of water over the Victoria Falls is greatest from February to June following the summer rains, but they are a magnificent sight at any time of year.
Note: As there is no lifting equipment at the airport, you will be carried on and off the aircraft using an aisle chair. All Victoria Falls transfers are in a regular non-adapted vehicle.
Day 7
Today we visit the mighty Victoria Falls and its rainforest, which offers magnificent views.
Afterwards you may wish to visit Elephants Walk, a small crafts complex across the road from The Kingdom hotel, where you can see talented local artists and sculptors at work and support them by buying one of their items. Alternatively you can participate in various optional activities, such as a helicopter flight over the falls.
In the late afternoon enjoy a cruise on the Zambezi River where you may see hippos, crocodiles and abundant bird life.
Note: All Victoria Falls transfers are in a regular non-adapted vehicle. On the Zambezi cruise you will need to be lifted into the boat, so this excursion is only suitable for manual wheelchairs. There is no accessible toilet on board.
Day 8
Today transfer 2-hours to the Botswana border at Kasane. After completing immigration formalities, connect with your onward transfer to your game lodge situated near the Chobe River.
Chobe National Park is Botswana’s premier wildlife reserve and is uniquely situated at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers, where four African countries meet – Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Chobe River is the life-giving force of this region and provides a border between Botswana on the southern banks and Namibia on the northern banks. The river has extensive grassy floodplains on either side, which disappear under the annual floodwaters, making boats the best way of getting around.
After checking in to your lodge, enjoy a boat ride on the Chobe River, which is home to some of Botswana’s most spectacular wildlife, as well as abundant bird life. Game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately in this vast game sanctuary and hopefully you will see elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and other river-based wildlife today. Afterwards dine in the atmosphere that only the African bushveld can provide
Note: As a precautionary measure against foot and mouth disease, at the Botswanan border you may be required to have any footwear you plan to wear in Botswana treated by officials, so please carry at least one pair of shoes in your hand luggage for this treatment.
Some transfer vehicles do not cross the border, so you may be dropped off on one side of immigration control and collected on the other side by a different vehicle.
If you are unable to negotiate steps, you will need to be lifted down to the jetty and onto the boat. As such this holiday is not suitable for guests over a certain weight limit or power chairs.
Day 9
Rise at dawn to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day and enjoy a thrilling open-top game viewing drive with a lodge ranger.
Chobe National Park is home to vast herds of buffalo and elephant, as well as numerous other species which roam in profusion and diversity. During the dry season, vast elephant herds migrate from both south and north to congregate in their thousands along the Chobe River – the largest concentration of elephants in the whole of Africa. This migration of wildlife is possibly due to the creation of protected wildlife corridors, which allow the elephants to travel between the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Park (KAZA) countries safely. Also hope to see lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons and many other interesting animals before returning to your lodge.
Bird life along the river is also plentiful and you can hope to see a Fish eagle, Tawny eagle, African openbill stork, Marabou stork, Sacred ibis, Pied kingfisher, Cattle egret, Great egret, Spur-winged goose and much more, including Botswana's national bird - the glorious Lilac-breasted roller.
In the afternoon, enjoy another game-viewing boat ride on the Chobe River.
Note: You need some upper body strength for this safari, as you will need to be lifted into the front seat of the game viewing vehicle and into the boat. Children < 6 are not allowed on open top game drives.
Day 10
Today enjoy two more game activities in Chobe National Park.
Activities on offer vary by lodge, but usually include fishing on the Zambezi River, addition game drives in Chobe National Park or boat rides on the river, which gives you a completely different wildlife perspective. Some lodges offer excursions to a Namibian village across the river to see their culture and way of life, with immigration formalities at both Kasane and on the Namibian side.
Each African culture within KAZA has its own particular traditions with regards to song, dance and dress, however the one thing that they all have in common is their staple diet of a maize meal porridge. In Botswana this is called 'sadza' but in Namibia it is known as 'inkoko' or 'pap'.
After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way – including the spectacular Southern Cross.
Day 11
Transfer to Kasane Airport for your onward flight.
You will be met at Johannesburg Airport and transferred to your airport hotel.
Check in and relax in your warm African surroundings.
Day 12
Transfer to Johannesburg Airport for your flight home.
