Disabled Holidays in Maldives

Traditional houses on stilts in the water in the Maldives, Indian Ocean

Please note: the Maldives are not suitable for a full-time wheelchair user. A good alternative (and one of our manager’s favourites) is the beautiful Mauritius.

The magical Maldives consists of 26 atolls lying in the warm waters of the Laccadive Sea, 370 miles from the Indian subcontinent. Over 1,000 islands and coral reefs make up the ring-shaped chains of islands, many of which are uninhabited, while others have been developed for the high-end luxury market.

How to Get There - Direct flights to the UK from London take 10 hours. Visitors to the Maldives land on the main island of Male before transferring to their destination by speedboat or seaplane. Airport and resort staff are on hand to offer assistance, while the friendly welcome also extends to providing helping hands to holidaymakers in wheelchairs wherever they choose to go.

Best Time to Go - The islands get rainfall from July to August due to southwest monsoons, and from November to March due to northeast monsoons. Dry season is from December to April.

Maldives hotels, bungalows and villas are accessible, some with ramps as permanent fixtures while in other places ramps are quickly arranged. As everything is virtually on the same level, most ramped access is a shallow incline. Restaurants are often open-sided and the Maldivians are used to helping those with mobility access issues on beaches and elsewhere. One important aspect of the Maldives is that dogs aren’t allowed, so the Maldives aren’t a holiday destination for people with guide dogs.
