The town of Lourdes is in the Midi Pyrenees region of south west France and known throughout the world for being a major Catholic pilgrimage site. In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous saw a white-robed female apparition 18 times in a grotto called Massabiele along the banks of the Gave de Pau river. The lady revealed herself as the Virgin Mary, in a fervour Bernadette fell to the ground and dug into the earth until a puddle of water appeared, turning into a pool and forming into the sacred spring. Nowadays there are religious processions every day, and between April to October this pretty town is packed with pilgrims. By car / ferry - Driving to Lourdes from Calais takes approximately eleven hours. The distance is approximately 1100km and costs 227 euros in tolls.
By train - There is a connecting train to Lourdes from Toulouse. Trains to Toulouse from Paris Gare d’Austerlitz take approximately five hours.
By air - There are flights to Lourdes from London Stansted, flight time is approximately two hours.
