Disabled Holidays in Tallinn

View across Tallinn's medieval Old Town on a sunny day

Estonia’s historic capital by the sea, medieval Tallinn is a true hidden gem and one of Eastern Europe’s most mesmerising destinations.

From its wonderfully preserved UNESCO-listed Old Town to its modern arts scene and hip bars and cafés, this enchanting city is an exciting mix of past and present.

The Old Town dates back to the 13th century and is renowned for its wonderfully preserved Hanseatic buildings, towering Gothic spires, winding streets and – at wintertime – a magical Christmas market.

It’s also where you’ll find a wealth of fascinating historic sights, such as Town Hall Square, Toompea Castle (the seat of Estonia’s parliament) and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – not to mention plenty of enticing restaurants serving traditional Estonian dishes and locally brewed craft beer.

Outside the Old Town’s ancient city walls, classical architecture makes way for glistening accessible hotels, sprawling green spaces, vibrant Bohemian neighbourhoods and abandoned Soviet-era curious. More must-see attractions await here too, including the chocolate-box Kadriorg Palace, the modern Kumu Art Museum and the Song Festival Grounds – the birthplace of the Singing Revolution.

Tallinn’s compact nature ensures many of the main sites are within easy walking or rolling distance from one another – and although the Old Town has its fair share of cobblestones, paved accessible sections along many of the streets make getting around much easier.

Get the best views

Tallinn is such a beautiful city it’s worth taking the time to appreciate it fully. There are several vantage points around town, but two of most spectacular are Toompea Hill and the Tallinn TV Tower. Toompea’s Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform has ramped access and looks out across the Old Town’s russet roofs and church spires, making it ideal for getting that perfect skyline shot.

The TV Tower’s vistas are even more breathtaking. Located four miles outside of town, the tower ranks as Estonia’s tallest building (314 metres) and offers incredible panoramas of Tallinn, the surrounding countryside and the Baltic Sea. The tower is wheelchair accessible.

Explore museums old and new

Tallinn’s magical blend of tradition and modernity lends itself perfectly to its selection of museums and galleries. Top of the list is Kadriorg, a fairytale baroque palace built for Catherine I of Russia by Peter the Great in the 1700s. Set in gorgeous gardens, the palace houses a museum specialising in early foreign art from Russia and Western Europe. The park has many wheelchair-friendly pathways, and the main floor of the palace is accessible by wheelchair.

Close by you’ll also find the wheelchair-accessible Kumu Art Museum. Opened in 2006, it contains diverse collections of contemporary art and a permanent exhibition of Estonian art from the beginning of the 18th century until 1991.

For those interested in local history, additional disabled-friendly museums of note include the Estonian History Museum and the Estonian Open Air Museum, while the accessible Seaplane Harbour ranks as one of the best maritime museums in Europe.

Take an accessible tour

Tallinn has a great selection of tours available for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility, ranging from 2.5-hour walking/rolling adventures around the Old Town, to four-hour experiences venturing farther afield. These trips can be a great way to see everything the city has to offer and visit sights such as the Medieval Old Town, Kadriorg Palace, Freedom Square, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Presidential Palace.
