Holidays for People with Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

Lake, mountains and forest on a clear sunny day

DisabledHolidays.com can provide help and advice when booking a holiday if you, a family member or a friend has MND.

If you have a destination in mind, we’ll be able to advise on its suitability for you. Alternatively if you don’t have anywhere in mind, we will use our knowledge and expertise to find your perfect holiday.

Our job is to ensure that your holiday is stress free, from the time of booking to arriving home. As everyone’s requirements are different, we recommend calling one of our friendly advisors on 0161 260 2218 to discuss how we can arrange the ideal tailor-made holiday for you.

FAQs

What do I need to consider when flying and how can DisabledHolidays.com help?

  • Try to get an appointment with your doctor several months before you wish to travel and before making any payment towards your holiday. This is important in case you need any medical tests, which can take time to arrange.
  • Airport assistance can be pre-booked and arranged free of charge through us. We can arrange for someone to help you from your taxi at the airport, assist you at the check-in desk, escort you to the aircraft and help you board.
  • Hoists and lifts on/off the plane.
  • We can ensure you have priority boarding.
  • We will try our best to get you allocated seats on the aircraft.
  • Airlines usually require you to have someone with you at the airport and on the flight if you need to: evacuate the plane in an emergency, use the toilet, eat and drink or communicate with staff.
  • If you need prescribed feeds and fluid supplements on the plane, they must have the original label and original packaging given by a pharmacy along with a doctor’s note to ensure they can be taken through security.
  • If you are on a long flight, it is advisable to drink lots of water to keep you hydrated.
  • You can find a comprehensive guide to flying with MND here.

Can you find me accessible accommodation?

Yes. We are here to make sure that the location of your accommodation and the accommodation itself are accessible. We will make sure you have all the adaptations you require while on holiday. Here are some of the ways we can support you:

  • Accommodation in accessible locations/resorts (no steep inclines or hills).
  • Fully accessible accommodation guaranteed (other travel agents can request this but not guarantee).
  • Accessible rooms suitable for the level of your mobility; e.g., rooms with turning areas for wheelchair users, bed rails, room hoists, walk-in shower rooms, wheel-in shower chairs.
  • Riser recliner chairs.
  • Equipment hire; e.g., shower chairs, hoists, grab rails and other mobility equipment.
  • Rooms near lifts or on the ground floor.
  • Electric beds or profiling beds.
  • Rooms with fridges for medication or prescribed feeds.
  • Interconnecting rooms for carers.

Can you find the best accessible days out?

Yes. We can plan the accessibility of your chosen holiday destination before you book with us. If there is something in particular you would like to do on holiday, such as a day trip or a visit to the nearest accessible beach, we can arrange this for you prior to travel.

Would a cruise be suitable?

Yes. A cruise can be a very practical choice, as all of your facilities are in one place and you can visit several destinations while only unpacking once! You can choose from a range of wheelchair-adapted cabins, including an ocean view cabin, balcony cabin or a suite. Most of the cruises we offer have wide-access doors, handrails and lowered sinks and units (please ask upon enquiry). If you require any further equipment, such as a hoist or electric bed, we can arrange this for you.

The cruise ships we book have plenty of exciting accessible leisure facilities and a huge choice of restaurants, so you don’t need to worry about getting bored on days spent at sea! We can also arrange exciting wheelchair-accessible excursions at your ports of call. Some cruises occasionally access ports via tender. If you are unable to transfer to a tender, we can find you a cruise on which all ports are fully accessible.

Should I cruise alone or with a companion?

Although wheelchair and scooter users can travel alone on a cruise, please be aware that the crew are unable to assist you in moving around the vessel or in any personal day-to-day tasks. For this reason, we would suggest you be accompanied by a personal assistant or travelling companion to provide these services.

I need help delivering my luggage and mobility aids to my accommodation. Can you help me with this?

Yes. We highly recommend Bagsahead, who pick up your luggage and/or equipment from your home and deliver it straight to your accommodation. This means you can avoid the stress of queuing and can have extra space if you’re travelling by car. When you arrive at your accommodation, your luggage will be waiting for you.

What about travel insurance?

To help ensure peace of mind while on holiday, we advise getting travel insurance. We recommend our partner Fish Insurance, one of the UK’s biggest disability insurance providers, who provide cover for people with MND.
