Ataxia

DisabledHolidays.com can provide help and advice when booking a holiday for people with Ataxia. If you have a destination in mind, we’ll be able to advise on its suitability. Alternatively, if you don’t have anywhere in mind, we’ll use our knowledge and expertise to find your perfect holiday.

As everyone’s requirements are different, we recommend calling one of our friendly advisors on 0161 260 2218 to discuss how we can arrange the best holiday for you.

FAQs

Can you find me accommodation in an accessible location?

Yes. We understand that the location of your accommodation is very important. We can book somewhere where the surrounding terrain is not difficult and ensure that you can access the main doors of the accommodation without any obstacles. We also understand you might prefer to stay close to the shops, public transport and accessible attractions and will take this into consideration.

Can you arrange accessible accommodation?

Yes. We will always listen to your specific accessibility requirements and ensure that these are in place before we book your ideal holiday. We can arrange accommodation with facilities such as:

  • Wheelchair-accessible lifts to all floors
  • Ground-floor facilities
  • Step-free access to all public areas, including hoists to access pools
  • Specific bed on request; e.g., electric bed
  • Accessible wet room
  • Grab rails, shower stools, hoists
  • Raised toilet seat
  • Adapted kitchens, bathrooms and wide hallways
  • Any other mobility equipment you might require. Please request any further specific adaptations; e.g., lowered baths, bath boards, shower trolleys

Can I receive assistance at the airport?

Yes. Airport assistance can be pre-booked and arranged free of charge through us. We can arrange for someone to help you from your taxi at the airport, assist you at the check-in desk, and escort you to the aircraft and help you board. If needed, we can also arrange lifts on and off the plane.

Can you help me plan accessible days out?

Yes. We will do the research and ensure that you have a choice of exciting accessible days out. If you need to hire any equipment, we will organise this for you in advance. For example, if you want to visit the nearest beach, we can hire a beach wheelchair, or you might want to hit the slopes – there are many types of sit-skis we can organise for you!

I’m worried the cabin crew will not understand Ataxia. Can you make them aware of my condition?

Yes. We realise that people with Ataxia are sometimes mistaken for being “drunk” by those who do not understand their condition. We can ensure the cabin crew are informed of your condition in advance in order to avoid such unfortunate issues from occurring.

Is a cruise a good choice for a wheelchair user?

Yes. You can choose from a range of wheelchair-adapted cabins, including an ocean view cabin, balcony cabin or a suite. These all have wide-access doors, lowered sinks, units and handrails. If you require any further equipment, such as a hoist or electric bed, we can arrange this for you.

The cruise ships we book have plenty of exciting accessible leisure facilities and a huge choice of restaurants, so you don’t need to worry about getting bored on days spent at sea! We can also arrange exciting wheelchair-accessible excursions at your ports of call. Some cruises occasionally access ports via tender. If you are unable to transfer to a tender, we can find you a cruise on which all ports are fully accessible.

Can a wheelchair user travel alone on a cruise?

Although wheelchair and scooter users can travel alone on a cruise, please be aware that the crew are unable to assist you in moving around the vessel or in any personal day-to-day tasks. For this reason, we would suggest you be accompanied by a personal assistant or travelling companion to provide these services.

I need help delivering my luggage and mobility aids to my accommodation. Can you help me with this?

Yes. We highly recommend Bagsahead, who pick up your luggage and/or equipment from your home and deliver it straight to your accommodation. This means you can avoid the stress of queuing and can have extra space if you’re travelling by car. When you arrive at your accommodation, your luggage will be waiting for you.

What about travel insurance?

To ensure you enjoy a safe and secure holiday, we advise getting travel insurance. We recommend our partner Fish Insurance, one of the UK’s biggest disability insurance providers, who offer cover for people with Ataxia.

More information about Ataxia is available on the Ataxia UK website.
