Holidays for People with Autism

Autism heart logo in hands

DisabledHolidays.com can provide help and advice when booking a holiday if you, a family member or a friend has autism.

If you have a destination in mind, we’ll be able to advise on its suitability. Alternatively, if you don’t have anywhere in mind, we’ll use our knowledge and expertise to find your perfect holiday.

We understand that autistic children are best suited to structure and routine and that a holiday is a break from that. Our job is to ensure that your holiday is stress-free, from the time of booking to arriving home. As everyone’s requirements are different, we recommend calling one of our friendly advisors on 0161 260 2218 to discuss how we can arrange the perfect holiday for you.

FAQs

Can you book suitable accommodation for us?

Yes. We will arrange suitable accommodation to ensure that you have a stress-free holiday. These are some of the adaptations we can organise:

  • Accommodation close to the airport so that your transfer is not too long. We can also find a perfect UK break for you if you would prefer. We do kids packs as well, so they can be entertained while you relax.
  • If your child needs to be near a quiet spot to take breaks during the day, we can ensure that you are staying close to attractions, making it easy to return to your accommodation.
  • Accommodation with owners who have an understanding of autism to provide extra reassurance for parents and carers.
  • Guaranteed rooms with your requirements. For example, we can book rooms away from busy corridors or noisy areas if your child finds noise distressing. Other travel agents only request this provision – we guarantee it.
  • Accommodation with cooking facilities and a spacious kitchen to avoid busy restaurants.

Can you arrange assistance at the airport?

Yes. Some arrangements we can organise are:

  • Extra legroom
  • A seat away from the noise of the engine
  • Noise-cancelling headphones
  • Bulkhead seats that feel less confining and eliminate seat-kicking

My child is autistic. How can I help them prepare for travelling?

It’s helpful to familiarise your child with what they might expect to do or see on their holiday. Here are some suggestions:

  • We can prepare suitable day trips in advance so that you have time to talk to your child about which attractions you will be visiting.
  • We recommend that you look through travel brochures with your child, show them pictures of the accommodation and use Google Street Maps to familiarise your child with local surroundings.

Do I need specific ID when travelling with an autistic child?

Yes. It is important that you get your child an ID badge, bracelet or necklace with contact information so that you can feel more at ease.

What should I consider when packing for my autistic child?

  • Any tangible reinforcements to reward your child’s good behaviour
  • Assistive communication tools
  • Journey distractions; e.g., games, toys, iPad, activity book
  • Noise-cancelling headphones

What about travel insurance?

To ensure you enjoy a safe and secure holiday, we advise getting travel insurance. We recommend our partner Fish Insurance, one of the UK’s biggest disability insurance providers, who provide cover for autistic people.

For more helpful information on autism, we recommend visiting the National Autistic Society’s website.
